Not all food brands attempt cuteness and thank goodness. But when they do, it’s absolutely an added delight―maybe some brighter colors, a silly shape, and yes, often some kind of a face. And that’s when it can start to feel like a slippery slope into either creepy or too cute to eat.

Really, there’s an odd juncture in the “food cuteness” spectrum where it becomes, well, harder to actually eat the adorable edible thing. And (while they weren’t busy turning Chicken & Waffles into a cookie) our good friends at Oreo created a line of Halloween cookies that are dangerously, adorably close to crossing the line of cuteness. Turns out, they’re also dangerously close to crossing another terrifying line―but more on that, later.
Introducing Oreoids
Yes, that is the official name that Oreos has given to these limited-edition, fudge-dipped Halloween cookies. Actually the full name is Oreoid Monsters, which is helpful since “Oreoids” sounds like a skin condition or something you stare at the sky to see late at night.
The designs actually do a good job of balancing the spooky-kooky vibe with cuteness and fun. The cookies are green, orange, purple, and white. Available in Double Stuf and Golden Sandwich Cookies, each cookie is dipped in fudge. The orange and purple cookies are decorated as Cyclops. The green cookie looks like Frankenstein while the white cookie is a mummy. The Frankenstein’s sprinkles also include some adorable bats as hair. Frankly, these couldn’t be cuter. Oreo did a great job of balancing that adorable factor without leaning into some uncanny valley vibes of eating a face.
The Monster In The Room
But there’s a couple catches with this release that taint that cuteness factor. Yep, the only non-cute thing about the cookies is the price. Well, the price and availability―exclusive to Oreo.com, one box is $39.99 for a 12-pack. Granted, the dozen cookies come in a different kind of Oreo box, which is fun for collectors and Oreo super-fans alike. But in this economy, asking for forty bucks for twelve cookies because you gave them eyes (not even two!) is shockingly insulting.
If you’re not sticker-shocked at the price, these are perfect for Halloween parties. And if these cookies don’t appeal, because of the price tag or just the endlessness of that cyclops stare, you can always try the new Oreos ice cream flavor…
