Sonic’s New Drink Lineup Sits Somewhere In The Middle

If there’s one thing food companies love to do, it’s invent an entirely new word for a season or period of time that hitherto got along just fine without it. Example 1: Summerween, the newly coined term for the weeks that stretch across summer on the way Halloween, and which is now being attached to spooky foods released (some might say prematurely) during the hottest months of the year (Nestlé has done just that). Example 2: Hotumn, which is…kinda exactly the same time period, and which has just been announced by Sonic.

Is it in Sonic’s privilege to completely rebrand the bookmark ends of two seasons? Well, it’s not actually trying to do so – it’s the name of its new drinks range. We shall discuss. 

Sonic’s Hotumn Drink Lineup

Yesterday, Sonic announced its new Hotumn drink range, which it described in its press release as a way to “playfully [embrace] the annual rush to declare fall’s arrival.” This new drink lineup, so sayeth Sonic, is for people who might already be thinking ahead to fall, but who are still in the throes of hot and humid weather every day. Think of them as coziness combined with coolness. 

With that vibe in mind, Sonic’s bringing out four Hotumn flavors starting next week – and they are…

• Cherry Pie made with Coke: Cherry, vanilla, and sweet cream flavors are combined with Coca-Cola and topped with a cherry. 
• Blueberry Pie made with Dr Pepper: Blueberry purée, vanilla, and sweet cream meet in a Dr Pepper base.
• Harvest Berry made with Sprite: Wildberry puree, cranberry, and vanilla all get into the pool with Sprite. 
• Cranberry Orchard Sweet Tea: Peach puree and cranberry dance a glorious dance with freshly brewed Sweet Iced Tea.

My very professional opinion on these is that each one sounds progressively better than the last. Holding space for the Harvest Berry flavor, TBH – that sounds delish. 

When Can I Try These Curiously Named Drinks?

From August 24. Sonic’s limited-time Hotumn lineup will be available from next Monday, in-store and through the Sonic app. The drinks follow hot on the heels of the chain’s release of its Garlic Parmesan Ranch Crispy Tender Wrap and a corn dog deal that saw it giving them out for 99 cents last week. You can’t say that this restaurant hasn’t been busy trying to get people through its doors, folks. What’s next? Finter (fall and winter)? Colring (cold spring)? Two free ideas for you there, Sonic.
