Curry up and head over to Trader Joe’s because they just released a new snack item called Papadums Lentil and Chickpea Crisps. Just when I thought Trader Joe’s couldn’t innovate any further, they innovated their way right into my heart. Well, they would have, were they not already permanent residents there. You get it, I love Trader Joe’s. But I’m not being biased when I say that this is actually such a cool product!
I grew up in a part of Northern California where there aren’t quite as many Indian restaurants as in other parts of the U.S. The restaurants we do have mainly serve naan, so I’ve only had papadum a couple of times in my life. But, man, is it good. Imagine a deep-fried, shatteringly crisp cracker made out of some form of bean, lentil, chickpea, rice, or potato (or essentially anything but wheat) flour. Now imagine dipping that beautifully crisp circle of deep-fried awesomeness into a chutney or curry. My mouth is watering. I want it.
The Trader Joe’s version have lentils and chickpeas as their base, and are bite-sized as opposed to classic papadums (which are usually around six inches across, although I can’t say I’ve ever measured one). With smaller size comes great dippability (I think I heard that in a Spiderman movie once), and I’m super stoked to dip these in EVERYTHING. Especially those premade lentil dal pouches they have at Trader Joe’s? Ugh, *chef’s kiss*.
I understand that I need to act fast though. Judging by past new snack item releases, these vegan and gluten-free beauties are not going to stay on TJ shelves long. I think I’ll papadum (get it? Like “pop on down”? I know that one was a stretch) to Trader Joe’s this weekend and see if I can find them. I’m always down for an excuse to make some Indian food (and, let’s be honest, an excuse to visit my beloved TJ’s).
