The food world gets stranger by the minute. If we dare say it, it does feel like, sometimes, juuuuust sometimes, food companies are running a little thin on ideas – and this, combined with the need for virality to sell things nowadays, means that we’ve seen some seriously wacky stuff come out in recent memory.

Now, I am not in any way saying that the following companies have fallen prey to either of those two things. That’s not what I’m getting at. If anything, they’re a testament to the fact that food execs still have plenty of things up their sleeves. But are they weird? Yes. Did they grab attention? Yes. Do they continue to, as evidenced by me writing this article about them? Yes. Here are the most bizarre foods we’ve seen so far this year.

Bush’s Rocket Pop Baked Beans

When Bush’s wild baked bean flavors dropped in May, we had to do a double-take – mainly because of the presence of a rocket pop flavor in there. Yes, Bush’s decided to take the frozen treat, which is famed for being super-sweet to the point of sickly, and combine it with legumes. Naturally.

Buh’s also decided to release an apple pie flavor and a dill pickle flavor in there, too. Those would have been odd enough on their own. But the rocket pop one stole the thunder.

McDonald’s McNugget Caviar Kits

Back in February, McDonald’s decided that it was time to class things up, for reasons that are still unbeknownst to us (it was officially for Valentine’s Day, but still, what was going on over there?). The restaurant dropped McNugget Caviar Kits, combining Italian-raised Sturgeon caviar, crème fraîche, and nugs – for free!

We actually tried these caviar kits when they came out, and perhaps as expected, they were a mixed bag, but not altogether terrible. McDonald’s didn’t fall over here. We worry that it will be encouragement for the next strange creation.

Grillo’s Pickle Smoothie

I feel like I’ve talked a lot about Grillo’s Pickle Smoothie, which it brought out with Smoothie King – and that’s probably because I keep coming back to it as something that’s very, very, very weird. The two brands jumped on the dill pickle train here and managed to sweep it up in the news stakes.

As you might expect, this thing wasn’t exactly designed to be savored: A Mashed review referred to it as a “gimmick,” and highlighted its ability to prompt potential sensory overload. What a strange time we live in.

Cinnabon-Flavored Bacon Jerky

Back in March, Cinnabon and Wicked Cutz announced that they were going into business with each other, and the result? Cinnabon-flavored bacon jerky. Each piece was (and is) rolled in sweet cinnamon sugar, for a salty, spicy, sweet bite.

This is one of those weird foods that, to be honest, I do think would work – and if recent taste tests are anything to go by, it does. We’re hoping this has a wider rollout soon.
