I’m sure the sales say otherwise, but I swear Sour Patch Kids Watermelon gummies are more popular than the original Sour Patch Kids. After all, I’m not reviewing a regular Sour Patch Kids Slurpee today, am I? Earlier this month, 7-ELEVEN announced two licensed Slurpee drinks hitting 7-ELEVEN, Speedway, and Stripes locations nationwide: one based on Fresca Zero Sugar and one based on Sour Patch Kids Watermelon candy.

I found the latter at a middle-of-nowhere truck stop 7-ELEVEN between Chicago and Kansas City. While I was tempted by the “purchase a bag of Sour Patch Kids for a free small Slurpee” deal, I ended up grabbing a large to make sure I could review this in-depth. (I also grabbed all three of 7-ELEVEN’s new in-house sodas for an upcoming review.) Let’s find out if this new Slurpee is worthy of the Sour Patch Kids Watermelon name.

Sour Candy Slurpee!

Sour Patch Kids Watermelon Slurpee Review

Pros: This Sour Patch Kids Watermelon Slurpee tastes like those last few watermelon gummies that have rolled around in all the loose citric acid; this is definitely more sour than the last sour candy-flavored Slurpee I reviewed for Sporked. While I wish the watermelon flavor was a little stronger, the true sour fanatics will go crazy for this one. (And for the Simpsons fans, this nuclear-green Slurpee is the closest thing we’ll get to the fabled Super Squishee.)

Cons: Drinking this made me realize Sour Patch Kids Watermelon don’t taste that much like watermelon! With the candy, you have to eat multiple pieces before you can taste watermelon underneath the sourness; this Slurpee does not pull off that same magic trick. This Slurpee is 90% sour and 10% watermelon, and that combination had me feeling like a kid in an old sour candy commercial.

Is this the only way to drink Sour Patch Kids?

The very same day 7-ELEVEN emailed me about this new release, I got an email about Urban Air Adventure Park’s new Sour Patch Kids Watermelon ICEE. As we all know, Slurpees and ICEEs are very different… probably. I’ve also seen frozen Sour Patch Kids drinks in multiple different flavors at Casey’s and QuikTrip.

7-ELEVEN themselves have released multiple different Sour Patch Kids-flavored Slurpees in the past. Hell, this isn’t even the first time 7-ELEVEN has launched a Sour Patch Kids Watermelon Slurpee! This flavor debuted for the first time ten years ago this summer. While I’m sure the formula got an update in the meantime, it’s good to know the concept has legs.
