We Like SUNNYD Peeps More Than That Purple Stuff

Are Peeps candy? Marshmallows are usually an ingredient, rather than a standalone snack. Let’s make it extra complicated: how do you classify a beverage-flavored Peep? This thematic follow-up to 2023’s Dr Pepper Peeps, the best Peep innovation in recent years, is based on the classic citrus drink from the 1960s. The good people (Peep-le?) at Peeps sent over a pack of these citrusy new Peeps for Sporked‘s preeminent beverage-flavored-food reviewer; let’s find out whether these can unleash the power of the sun.

SUNNYD Peeps

Pros: While the majority of my recent SUNNYD consumption has been in their vodka seltzer format, this is no doubt SUNNYD. The orange citrus flavor is strong (too strong for some of my taste testers) and very reminiscent of the original orange juice simulacrum. Much like previous beverage-flavored Peeps, the marshmallow flavor ends up entirely overshadowed—a huge positive in my eyes, considering how disparate a flavor combination that would be.

Cons: I always thought SUNNYD was just orange, but according to the front of this pack of Peeps, the juice(?) drink is based on orange, lemon, lime, and… either blood orange or grapefruit? I can’t pretend to taste all of those individual fruits in these marshmallows, but I can at least distinguish orange and lime.

Where can I get my hands on SUNNYD Peeps?

These citrus juice-ish Peeps are available exclusively in Target’s expansive seasonal candy section. Select previously-exclusive Peeps have returned in later years with expanded availability. If SUNNYD Peeps perform well this year, I expect we’ll see them on shelves at multiple retailers ahead of future Easters.

What other new Peeps are hitting shelves in time for Easter?

The Peeps scientists have been hard at work ahead of this spring season. SUNNYD Peeps aren’t the only store-exclusive flavor; you’ll have to head to Kroger for the brand-new swicy Chili Lime Mango-flavored Peeps. Luckily, one of the wildest flavors launched this year is available wherever Peeps are sold: Frosted Strawberry Pop-Tarts. I’ll be reviewing all these Peeps as soon as my stomach will allow; stay tuned to Sporked for more springtime fun.
