Earlier this year, Moe’s Southwest Grill debuted a new menu item: Grilled Burrito Dippers. These miniature protein-packed burritos are the perfect size to dunk in some dipping sauce, hence the name. Moe’s was nice enough to send over a gift card so I could try the new Grilled Burrito Dippers for myself; let’s find out whether this will further cement the “mini dipping burrito” as a new standard in American-Mexican fusion.

What’s the difference between this and the version from Taco Bell?

Back in April, Sporked’s Ariana Losch expressed her excitement for the spiritual return of Taco Bell‘s Cheesy Burrito Dippers by way of this new Moe’s Southwest Grill item. While she covered the differences between the two chains’ takes on the same concept in detail, we’ll run through a quick summary.

Taco Bell‘s Cheesy Burrito Dippers were filled with their three-cheese blend, rice, and your choice of beef or chicken before being grilled; dipping sauces included Creamy Garlic, Creamy Chipotle, or Nacho Cheese. Moe’s Grilled Burrito Dippers are filled with a protein (your choice of steak, white meat chicken, Adobo chicken, ground beef, tofu, or a limited-time-only brisket) plus Oaxaca cheese and queso before being grilled; dipping sauces include Chipotle Ranch, Poblano Crema, Chili Lime, or Moe’s Sauce.

Moe’s Southwest Grill Grilled Burrito Dipper (Steak) Review
Grilled Burrito Dippers from Moe's Southwest Grill

New Moe’s Southwest Grill Item!

Like every entree from Moe’s, this menu item is super customizable–six proteins and four dipping sauces, at the time of this writing. While I’d love to try every combination of protein and dipping sauce available in Moe’s Grilled Burrito Dipper form (seriously, I would love that), it just isn’t viable from the “plausible caloric intake” perspective. For the purposes of this review, I went with what I’d order sans any responsibility to write about it afterwards: Steak with Chipotle Ranch.

Pros: I was impressed with the generous protein portion in such a small burrito. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise considering the burrito contains exclusively protein and cheese. While this isn’t intended as an entree, I could definitely see myself ordering two of these as a nice budget-friendly lunch–or four for a hefty dinner. As it stands, I already want to circle back and try a few other protein variants; that brisket is calling out to me…

Cons: Asking for less meat and cheese goes against my core values, but I wouldn’t have minded a little rice in here to break up the density of the other fillings.
