Food brands have been releasing their Halloween items for months now (we first caught wind of M&M’s Halloween flavors back in MAY, and although they weren’t dropped in Spring, it does speak to how early these things start to bubble up) – but chains are a little different. While candies and cakes tend to rock up in supermarkets towards the end of summer, fast food operations exercise a certain level of restraint by waiting until fall has actually arrived.

Well, fall has actually arrived, and as such, we’re now getting Halloween menus at a rapid lick. In the last fortnight, Dunkin’ and Dairy Queen have dropped their spooky specials, and this week, Cold Stone Creamery has done the same. A Halloween classic returns.

Boo Batter Is Back

This year, Cold Stone Creamery has brought back Boo Batter, its annual Halloween ice cream. First released in 2019, it’s a pitch-black version of the chain’s Cake Batter Ice Cream. Cold Stone Creamery was relatively early to the “turn it black and make it spooky” trend that pops up this time of year (which Hidden Valley has since adopted with its black ranch dressing), and it lightens things up with the mix-ins that come embedded in the frozen treat.

Which mix-ins, you ask? Well! This year, Cold Stone Creamery is serving its Trick or Treat Creation, Boo Batter Ice Cream mixed with Kit Kat, Halloween Oreo, and M&M’s pieces. Colorful, bright, and, we’re sure, incredibly sweet. Alongside this, you can grab a Witches’ Boo, a shake made from Boo Batter, Halloween Oreo cookies, whipped topping, and spooky sprinkles. Or, you can get your Boo Batter in taco form: Its Boo Batter Ice Cream Taco envelops the ice cream in an orange waffle shell, with chocolate and spooky sprinkles on top. Don’t fancy any of this? Just get Boo Batter on its own.

Get It Now!

Boo Batter is available now, and it will come as absolutely no surprise that it won’t be around for long. You have until October 31 to grab it in whichever form you choose, before it disappears for another year.

Cold Stone Creamery’s Halloween drop follows the arrival of its fall menu just a few weeks ago, which saw the chain go big on old-school flavors. Graham cracker and banana pudding featured heavily — and the latter flavor has also shown up in plenty of other places this year, a sign, it seems, of the never-ending pull of nostalgia. The people yearn for classic desserts.
