Is it just me or does it feel like no brand is willing to stay in their lane these days? I mean, even just in the last week Ghost Energy announced a protein cereal, Mtn Dew announced a Baja Blast-branded Doritos flavor, and Sour Patch Kids teamed up with Oreo on a cookie—truly, there is no end to the genre-bending shenanigans. This brings us to the most recent example: Fruity Pebbles is releasing two new limited-edition cereals for the summer: Fruity Pebbles Waffles! cereal and Summer Fruity Pebbles.
What will Fruity Pebbles Waffles! taste like? Will they be good enough to make us “leggo” our Eggo cereal? Will Summer Fruity Pebbles taste the same as regular Fruity Pebbles?
All important questions, to be sure, but let’s start with flavor. According to Post, as reported by @Candyhunting on Instagram, the cereal company behind all things Fruity and Pebbly, the waffle-shaped creations will be “fruity-blasted waffle pieces with notes of maple syrup and the Fruity Pebbles flavor fans know and love.” So…Fruity Pebbles flavor with a hint of maple? I am very curious to taste these, as in my experience a “hint” of maple can mean anything from a “smidgen” to “Mrs. Butterworth owns this establishment and you.” Appearance-wise, the cereal bits look a lot like Eggo cereal bits, but they’re square instead of round and speckled with Funfetti-esque rainbow Fruity Pebbles bits. In fact, they look a whole lot like Waffle Crisp cereal, which, coincidentally, is also made by Post. So it is possible that Fruity Pebbles Waffles! will taste like Waffle Crisp and Fruity Pebbles had a grid-shaped, Funfetti-fied child—we will just have to try them when they hit stores in May. In the meantime, we’ll also assume they took some inspiration from those full-size Fruity Pebbles waffles you can find in the frozen section
Also coming to stores in May are the Summer Fruity Pebbles, which are—get this—just normal Fruity Pebbles but only in the colors pink and blue (and in a limited-edition summer-themed box). I have to say, I’m not super sure who this cereal is even for, but who knows? Maybe the summery vibe will actually make the classic Fruity Pebbles taste even fruitier and pebblier.
There’s a lot we won’t know until these cereals are released, but I do know one thing: I will be trying Fruity Pebbles Waffles! side by side with Waffle Crisp so I can solve this mystery once and for all (and finally take down the conspira-cereal corkboard that has been taking up so much room in my apartment this spring).
