While we’re still recovering from the last seasonal Reese’s announcement, another one is already barreling down the pipeline. Thanks to an early listing on a candy wholesale site, we know that the next new Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups innovation is based on the most Valentine’s-coded cake flavor in existence. Roses are red, violets are blue, Red Velvet Reese’s Cups are coming to a Valentine’s aisle near you.
Does Reese’s normally do a new flavor for Valentine’s Day?
Nope! After some digging, it appears this will be the first new Reese’s Cup flavor ever debuted for the Valentine’s season. Reese’s is no stranger to Cupid’s big month, but to date, their new releases have been exclusively in their comfort zone for seasonal releases: unnecessary shapes. No matter what this new Reese’s Cup ends up tasting like, it’s already a major visual improvement over Reese’s Valentine’s innovation from this year: Pink Creme…we’ll say body parts to be polite.
What part of the Reese’s Cup is getting red velveted?
The top half of the milk chocolate is being replaced with a Red Velvet flavored creme. Previous Reese’s Cup variants have used this same format to varying levels of success. I personally loved the 2021 variant that featured marshmallow-flavored creme, but this year’s vanilla-flavored creme outing left a lot to be desired. Considering the actual flavor of red velvet is something of a mystery (and we’re all used to eating it with cream cheese frosting), it’s up in the air how this peanut butter cup variant will land.
Isn’t red velvet just chocolate?
Not quite! Per Sporked’s own article, “What Flavor Is Red Velvet, Actually?” by Matt Crowley, red velvet is “a mixture of vanilla and a dash of cocoa, plus more vinegary tartness than you might find in a typical cake.” Time will tell how this translates to a Reese’s Cup, but if it’s even half as good as Red Velvet Oreos, we’re all in for a lovely Valentine’s Day.
When will these new Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups hit shelves?
While I don’t have the exact date, a knowledgeable friend was able to tell me that this will hit shelves sometime in January 2025. Considering Valentine’s season seems to begin the moment they’ve cleared out all the leftover funny numerical sunglasses from New Years’ Eve, this tracks as a believable release date. These should be available everywhere Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are sold. The wholesale candy site that I got this information from suggested placing the product display near the Valentine’s greeting cards, so maybe check that aisle first.
