We all know the age-old saying: “When you are a consumer packaged goods company and you start to run out of snack flavor ideas, just combine some existing products or flavors and people will buy whatever you come up with, because people love things that are new, even if they aren’t actually new.”
No? No one else’s parents always said that to them right before any big exam or life event? Was no one else raised by the Kool-Aid Man, Tony the Tiger, and a single Totino’s Pizza Roll?
Ahem, anyway, these sorts of mashups seem to be a thing lately, (a la General Mills Remix, Apple Jacks Pop Tarts, and Flamin’ Hot anything), so no way was Doritos going to pass up the opportunity to hop on the flavor-mix train. And not only did they mix two flavors, they mixed two very trendy flavors to create a bag of Doritos Collisions that contains both Tangy Pickle Doritos and Cool Ranch Doritos (yes, just like the Hidden Valley pickle ranch that recently came out).
So where can I get these Tangy Pickle and Cool Ranch Doritos Collisions? Also, who even knew Tangy Pickle Doritos existed?!
I certainly had no idea this was happening. Probably because it appears the only place to get them will be Sam’s Club, according to this Instagram post from @mnmtwinz, but it also looks like they aren’t in stock on the Sam’s Club site just yet. But the hype for these is real. I mean, what could be bad? They are Cool Ranch Doritos (the king of all Doritos), plus Tangy Pickle Doritos, which were first introduced back in summer of 2020, again in January 2021, and again in August 2021 as part of a sweepstakes. These Tangy Pickle Doritos supposedly taste like a mix of salt and vinegar and dill, and now, after a couple years’ hiatus, they are back.
Not only is this not Tangy Pickle’s first rodeo, Doritos has experimented with these Collisions flavors before, too. Back in 2007, they released Hot Wings & Blue Cheese, Zesty Taco & Chipotle Ranch, Habanero & Guacamole, Cheesy Enchilada & Sour Cream, and Pizza Cravers & Ranch, but, sadly, these were all discontinued shortly thereafter. A shame. I would’ve wanted to get one of each of those bags, combine them all, and then host a party for the “Super Bowl of Chips” or “March Madness,” and see how confused people are when they show up and there are no sports involved, just chips.
In other words, this new Collisions flavor is a flavor of rebirth on so many levels. We are getting the Tangy Pickle Doritos back, the concept of Doritos Collisions is rising again, and also it’s spring, which I’m told is a time for rebirth. We are in a veritable Doritos renaissance over here, and, as the Medicis used to say, “Wow, I can’t wait to try these Doritos and I wonder what wacky flavor combo they will come up with next!”
