At this point, the introduction of a new product as another sort of celebrity alcohol feels so unnecessary. If someone suggests something like that to me, frankly I’d probably greet them with an eye roll. I mean, with all of the alcohols that are already on the market, what does this, that, or the other celebrity have to add in nuance? There’s just no longer demand for another celebrity alcohol brand. That is, unless you’re talking about the nonalcoholic-alcohol market. Nonalcoholic beers, wines, and liquors are still on the rise in popularity and have become almost too good.

Decreased alcohol consumption is on the rise and Tom Holland, for one, has tapped into that market with the company he co-founded, Bero. And the recent launch of their Bero Shandies allows them to expand their consumer base even further.

What Inspired This New Launch?

Holland himself has been a nonalcoholic beer lover in his journey through sobriety and his fiancé (or are we calling Zendaya his wife now?) has never been much of a drinker, Holland said to Amy Poehler in an interview on her podcast. In wanting to make something that “Z”―as he affectionately calls her―would enjoy, he took inspiration from the classic British summertime bev, the Shandy.

Shandies were invented in 19th century England to accommodate for a more refreshing and lower alcohol alternative for pints in the summertime. They typically feature a mix of beer and a lemonade or citrus soda. For people that want something more refreshing or are less acclimated to the flavor of alcohol (or nonalcoholic beer), a Shandy would be a good place to start.

What’s In The Lineup

Holland’s recent launch hit stores on June 14 and included four flavors in the lineup. All of the Shandies in the launch have 30% volume of NA beer and 70% volume lemonade. The beer in each of the flavors stays the same and it’s their Kingston Golden Pils.

The first flavor in the lineup is certainly the most traditional. The “Daybreak Shandy” has a lemon-lime flavored lemonade. It’s a little bit of a spin on the traditional lemonade with the lime, but classic enough to satisfy any Shandy purist. The “Golden Hour Shandy” has a lemonade flavored with grapefruit that will not only provide a tang, but a mellow sweetness as well. It’s still heavy on the citrus, but with a bit more nuance.

The “Sunset Shandy” brings in floral tones to harmonize with the citrusy lemonade through its addition of elderflower. I mean, there’s nothing more classically British than flavoring your specialty drinks with elderflower. If you’re elderflower-curious like I was before I moved to London, then the mesh of other strong flavors in this drink just might introduce you gently enough to make you a convert like me. And if you crave the fresh summer produce like me, then you can even get that in the “Midnight Shandy.” It’s made with a blackberry yuzu lemonade, so it’s sweet, tart, and a little bit herbacious. If I could only try one, I’d reach for this one.
