Casa Sanchez Hot Salsa Roja

Most of the best salsa at the grocery store comes in a jar, but we’re absolutely hooked on this tub of salsa roja you’ll find in the refrigerated section. Unlike most deli-section salsa, this is not glorified pico de gallo. It’s zesty, umami, well blended, and so much like the good salsa at your favorite Mexican spot.

best queso

Best Queso

Marketside Queso Blanco

There’s a beloved Tex-Mex place here in L.A. that’s pretty much famous for its queso, and this Walmart queso is a dead ringer. It’s smooth, mild, and absolutely bursting with rich, cheesy flavor. Buy it as a dip for chips and we bet you’ll find a bunch of other uses for it, too—smothered burrito, anyone?

Best Guacamole

Good Foods Chunky Guacamole

Previously, our favorite guacamole at the grocery store was the spicy version of this Good Foods guac, but they went and discontinued it. Sigh. Lucky, though, their mild chunky guac is almost just as good. We do have to admit that it isn’t super chunky, but the fresh, simple flavor of ripe avocado makes up for the false advertising.

Fritos Hot Bean Dip

Don’t worry. This isn’t actually all that spicy. It really just has extra flavor. It’s smooth and creamy and comes in a very pleasing little can that is perfect for eating entirely by yourself. “I never thought I would crave bean dip, but I crave this Fritos bean dip,” Justine wrote in her ranking of the best bean dip

Best Spinach Artichoke Dip

Best Spinach Artichoke Dip

Marketside Spinach & Artichoke Dip

This was the creamiest, most decadent spinach-artichoke dip we tasted in our taste test because it’s made with cream cheese. And the whole chunks of artichokes offer a tangy flavor that pairs perfectly with that creaminess. But it doesn’t stop there. Three cheeses (mozzarella, parmesan, and asiago) take it over the top to make it a seriously delicious dip.

La Terra Fina Caramelized Onion with Roasted Garlic Dip & Spread

Best French Onion Dip

La Terra Fina Caramelized Onion with Roasted Garlic Dip & Spread

An onion dip with actual pieces of caramelized onion in it? Oh hell yeah. “This is one of the best things I’ve ever eaten,” says fellow taste-tester and dip savant Jordan Myrick. It has everything going for it: a bold onion flavor, an incredibly rich and creamy base, and even a hint of roasted garlic to deepen (and slightly sweeten) the flavor. As addictive as Frito-Lay’s French onion dip from a can is, this stuff is a step above it. If you want something a little fancier but still super crowd pleasing, this is one of the best dips to pick up.

heluva good bacon horseradish dip review

Best Bacon Dip

Heluva Good Bacon Horseradish

This is going to sound like hyperbole, but I’m pretty sure this is my favorite dip of all time. It’s so cool and creamy. It’s loaded with horseradish flavor without being TOO spicy (it won’t make your nose run). We tasted multiple bacon dips and we hated most of them. They all have an old meat/old grease flavor. One of them appeared to have bacon grease bubbling to the top. Pretty gross! But this one does a great job of incorporating smoky bacon flavor without the fatty bits, weird flavors, or weird chew. Honestly, I can’t think of anything I’d rather scoop up with a nice ridged potato chip.

Holy Hummus Traditional Classic Hummus

Holy Hummus Traditional Classic Hummus

This hummus is a revelation. It’s incredibly smooth without being gummy (our editor-in-chief Justine Sterling likened it to freshly poured concrete, if concrete, you know, tasted good). The flavor leans heavily on nutty, high-quality tahini in a way that sets it apart from every other store bought hummus we’ve tried. No hate to Sabra, but everyone should experience the real deal with this stuff. It’s game-changing.

Fresh 'n Nova Baba Ganoush

Best Baba Ganoush

Fresh ‘n Nova Baba Ganoush

Hot take! Hot mother-effing take! This baba ganoush tastes better than some that we’ve had at restaurants. We hope you were ready to hear that. We know it’s a lot to take in. The other brands of store bought babaganoush did not come anywhere close to this little masterpiece; they really didn’t nail the creaminess and often added too much citric acid. (It’s kinda like how grocery store guac never matches the real deal.) But this is so smoky, tangy, and luxurious. The eggplant tastes beautifully fresh and tender. It’s one of the best dips we’ve ever tried, and it’s gone completely under the radar. Everyone please buy it! Go!

Marketside Buffalo Style Chicken Dip

Another triumph from Walmart’s Marketside brand! “Marketside Buffalo Chicken Dip is the most buffalo chicken-y buffalo chicken dip on the market,” Jordan wrote in their ranking of the best Buffalo chicken dips. “It’s super tangy, a little spicy, and really creamy.” And the chunks of celery and chicken add great texture. There’s no doubt that you are eating Buffalo chicken dip.

Tostitos Cheesy Enchilada Dip

We were absolutely floored by this dip. It’s cheesy. It’s spicy. It has whole black beans in it for texture. It’s really got it all. “I can’t believe I’d never had this before. I’ll tell you what, though: I will be having this regularly from here on out. It is definitely the best Tostitos dip on the market,” Sporked’s Jordan wrote in the Tostitos dips ranking. It’s also nachos in a jar. Just add tortilla chips

This dip packs some serious heat. It took the number one spot in our best spicy dips ranking, the number two spot in our best Costco dips ranking, and the number eight spot in our Bitchin’ Sauce flavors ranking. We are fans. As Jordan wrote in their review, “This is one of the few dips on the market that is honestly spicy.” And they know heat.

You see a lot of artichoke and spinach dips out there but this dip proves there should be more artichoke and jalapeño dips in the world. “This is so rich and super tangy,” Jordan wrote in their ranking of the best Costco dips. “The artichokes are briny and the pickled jalapeños are bright.” While you’re buying dip at Costco, be sure to pick up a massive bag of their excellent tortilla chips

Park Street Deli Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Dessert Dip

Okay, this is a weird one, folks. We’re not even totally sure what dessert dip is for, but we can’t resist this stuff. It’s not just cookie dough in a tub. It’s a creamy, smooth, cream cheese-based dip that’s absolutely loaded with chocolate chips. We ate it on graham crackers, but it would be good on fruit, too.

This out-of-the-box veggie dip is so good. How good? “You’ll find yourself buying raw carrots by the pound, just so you have an excuse to eat more of it—that’s how good,“ Justine wrote in her ranking of the best veggie dips. It’s extremely creamy so it won’t slide off a vegetable. And the flavor is perfectly pickley and zippy.

Inland Market Cajun Krab Dip

Best Cajun Crab Dip

Inland Market Cajun Krab Dip

Two of our lovely Sporked writers grew up on Inland Market’s Cajun Krab Dip from Publix, so go ahead. Call us biased. We’ll own it, loud and proud. There’s just something about this crab dip that makes it easy to grab a sleeve of club crackers and down the whole tub in one sitting. It’s not as heavily seasoned with Cajun spices as other brands, but that’s okay. It still carries a neat kick of heat at the end. The beauty of this dip is how fresh the imitation crab tastes—we’d expect nothing less from a brand you can pretty much only find at Publix.

Lipton Recipe Secrets Onion Soup & Dip Mix

If you’re looking to make your own dip (but not really put in a ton of effort), then stock up on this classic mix. Stirred into sour cream, this mix creates a dip that’s rich with oniony flavor, thanks to both dehydrated onions and onion powder. It has umami for days (hi, MSG!) and that’s what you want from an onion dip.

Plucky Pickle Dip

Plucky Pickle Dip

We bought this as a joke. We saw a pickle wearing sunglasses on the tub and thought, sure, why not. We never thought we’d find ourselves here, actually recommending it to the general public as one of the best store bought dips to buy. The lush cream cheese mixed with crunchy dills is so texturally delightful. The strong fresh pickle flavor has a briny twang that tastes good with a simple potato chip—but honestly, someone needs to put this in tuna salad

Trader Joe’s Vegan Nacho Dip

Even though this vegan dip isn’t labeled as “queso” it still took the top spot in our best vegan queso ranking. It’s tangy, it’s creamy, it’s zesty, and it’s good hot or cold. While, of course, it’s great as a dip on its own, it would also be good heated up and mixed with Ro-Tel. And it’s vegan! Who knew a vegan nacho dip could be one of our best dips of all time.

Boar’s Head Dark Chocolate Dessert Hummus

Not only is Boar’s Head the best chocolate hummus out there, it’s the only chocolate hummus Sporked recommends you buy. “The texture is creamy, the chocolate flavor is rich, and it looks more like icing than hummus, which helps with the cognitive dissonance created by sweet hummus,” Jordan wrote in their review. If you insist on eating chocolate hummus, it should be this chocolate hummus.

About the Author

Gwynedd Stuart

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
