Sporked Awards: Best New Take on an Old Snack We Tasted in 2022

One of the best things about working here at Sporked is getting a chance to try (and critique) all kinds of new products, from hot dog-flavored candy corn to ICEE-flavored cookies. But a lot of the “new” products we try aren’t new, per se, they’re existing products that have been tweaked, updated, or enhanced in one way or another. I’m talking, new flavors of the Pringles you know and love, new iterations of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and every new frontier that Frito-Lay explores. We had a lot to choose from, but we decided these were the best new takes on old snacks we tried in 2022.

Winner!

Cool Ranch Flavored Lay’s & Funyuns Flavored Lay’s

This summer, Lay’s released four limited-edition flavors of potato chips, all of them inspired by other Frito-Lay snacks. The Flavor Swap lineup included Fritos Chili Cheese Kettle Cooked Lay’s, Cheetos cheese-flavored Lay’s, Doritos Cool Ranch Lay’s, and Funyuns Onion-flavored Wavy Lay’s. All of them were good, but the Funyuns and Cool Ranch chips absolutely blew our minds. The flavor of the Funyuns Wavy Lay’s reminded me of Wise Onion & Garlic, my personal favorite chip of all time, and we thought the Cool Ranch Lay’s actually tasted bolder and better than Cool Ranch Doritos. When brands are releasing updates of existing snacks, they should always set out to make something even better than the original article. Frito-Lay nailed it here. The only thing I hate about them is that they’re limited edition. Lay’s, please bring these back!

Runner-Up!

Stuffed Puffs Classic Milk Chocolate Marshmallows

If you love big, fluffy marshmallows and you love chocolate, there is no reason you won’t love these milk chocolate-stuffed marshmallows as much as we did. They’re great for s’mores minus the mess or just eating right out of the bag. As Jordan Myrick said when they reviewed them back in July, “The filling is incredible! It tastes like a bunch of Hershey’s kisses were mashed up and stuffed inside a marshmallow.” Plus, the marshmallow has a nice texture and a mild vanilla flavor. When we heated these in the office microwave, the interior stayed relatively solid, but if you don’t demand meltiness, you’ll like these just fine.
