If there have been any common threads that connect a lot of the new snacks that have been released over the past year or so, they are “pickles,” “spicy,” and “why?!?” (and sometimes a few of those threads at the same time; lookin’ at you pickle jelly beans). We’ve seen everything from pickle ranch to pickle mustard, ketchup, and mochi ice cream. We’ve seen new spicy pickle chips from Grillo’s, the potato kind of pickle chips from Clancy’s and Doritos, and even “Ass-Kickin’ Spicy Pickle Popcorn”—the only product to cover all three of our aforementioned common threads. And now we are getting one more piquant, pickle-y product to add to the proverbial pickle pile: Limited Edition Spicy Dill Pickle Goldfish crackers. And you want to know something? I’m not even mad about it.
Where can we find these Spicy Dill Pickle Goldfish? What is the meaning of all this spicy snack madness? Will these hot Goldfish still be smiling back or grimacing from the capsaicin? (This would be very funny to me; please do this next time, Pepperidge Farm.)
Looks like these will be hitting shelves nationwide starting this week, so if you are a fan of all things spicy, pickle-y, and fish shaped, I recommend going to grab them as soon as you see them. They will be sold for roughly $3.69 “while supplies last,” so there is no telling how long these will be swimmin’ around in stores before they, as most orange fish are wont to do, go touch the “butt,” get captured by scuba divers, and end up in a dentist’s office in Australia.
As for what’s up with all of this spicy, pickle-y snack madness, Goldfish did some research and discovered that there are over 300 million pickle-related posts on TikTok and 53 million Americans requesting extra spice on GrubHub, so this just seems to be what the people want right now. Why not give the people what they want in Goldfish form? A first look at the packaging of these Spicy Dill Pickle Goldfish suggests that the crackers themselves will be a more neutral color than the bright orange Cheddar Goldfish and that they’ll be speckled with a spicy, pickle-y flavor powder. Based on the company’s description of these new Goldfish—which says they combine “tangy dill pickle flavor with a spicy kick on everyone’s favorite fish-shaped cracker”—I’m thinking these may not be cheesy at all. But hey, if the dill pickle and spice pack enough of a punch, it’s possible we won’t even miss that cheesy flavor. One last thing we don’t really know is “how spicy is spicy” when it comes to these Goldfish. Guess we will have to give them a try and let you know if these are more of a “snack that smiles back” or a “snack that delights in your self-inflicted, capsaicin-related pain.”
